CHINATOWN AFTER DARK - 1931 - BARBARA KENT - RARE DVD
An American is hired by Le Fong, an elderly Chinese man in San Francisco's Chinatown to go to China and bring back a keepsake dagger from Le Fong's home. On the way back, several people try to steal the seemingly worthless daggar from the man. When he finally delivers the dagger to Le Fong, the old man shows him a jewel hidden in the hollow handle of the dagger that will help his daughter Lotus get her start in America. But just then the lights go out, Le Fong and the man are killed, and the jewel disappears. The man's brother goes on a search for the killer of his brother, and to recover the jewel for Lotus, who he falls in love with. A chubby, sneezing detective Dooley stays one step behind him, also chasing the killer.

This movie is an early 'soundie' that has a good plot and pretty decent acting, considering the times. At this time in American cinema, film makers commonly use American actors for all of the major Chinese characters, and you'll notice accents that don't sound very Chinese. But still a worthy 'who-dunnit' from the early days of cinema.

THE HEADLESS WOMAN - 2008 - MARÍA ONETTO - RARE DVD
This film is centered around Vero, an Argentinean bourgeois woman, and how her life slowly twists out of control after she hits something, or someone, with her car. Here comes the incident that changes everything, as Vero is driving, she is distracted by her cell phone and looks down to get to it. By the time she does this, her car hits something but the camera stays in it as we see her car shaking and rattles. Although Vero seems indifferent about the situation, it is clear that it has a toll on it as she acts different from the Vero that we saw briefly at the beginning of the film. She acts clumsy and out of place, barely saying anything, and when she does, it doesn't always make sense or has a lot of substance. This solidifies towards the end of the movie when she is going to retrace her steps to remember her memory, but in the hospital and the Hotel she stayed in, there was no record proving that she was there. This makes the audience wonder if all this really happened or if Vero,...

KATE PLUS TEN - 1938 - JACK HULBERT - RARE DVD
She is the smartest crook in England, and she has just met the dumbest Inspector from Scotland Yard. She is Genevieve Tobin, as master criminal Kate Westhanger, and he is Jack Hulbert, as Inspector Mike Pemberton. I am only on the third sentence and I must try to correct the first one. When I say that Jack Hulbert as Inspector Pemberton is the dumbest copper . . . I don't mean like Peter Sellers as the Pink Panther . . . . And I don't mean that he is always a day late and a dollar short like many movie cops are portrayed . . . How can I explain the personality of this Inspector . . . . He is . . . well . . . He is Jack Hulbert . . . If you haven't seen enough of his movies to know his personality, after watching this adventure click on his name in the list of actors and check out a couple more of his movies. When Inspector Pemberton visits Lord Flamborough to investigate a missing cigarette lighter he tries to question the Lord's secretary, who turns out to be Kate, England's master criminal, head of a gang of thieves that numbers ten devious men. Pemberton is like a school-boy as he fawns over Kate, and even after he discovers that she is the head of a criminal gang, he declares his love for her. He pleads with her to quit the crime racket and go straight, but she rebuffs him and assures him that she enjoys her side of the law much better than his side of the law. Inspector Pemberton smiles and lovingly tells Kate that he will foil the big job she is planning, even though he has no clue what it is. As Kate continues planning the biggest gold heist in history, Pemberton keeps intruding into her life, and this guy isn't as clueless as many old movies paint Scotland Yard's finest . . . But he will not discover her devilishly clever plan until it is too late . . . Kate and her men have hijacked the whole train full of gold bullion and have disappeared completely after roaring down the track. Will Pemberton find the train full of gold and his heart-throb Kate before she vanishes from the country? Will her henchmen double-cross her as Pemberton has warned they would and leave her out in the cold? Will Kate and Pemberton somehow get together before the last frame of the movie, or will Kate be captured and sent to prison with her ten men? Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.

THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT - 1938 - EMILYN WILLIAMS - RARE DVD
All I want to know is, how do movie companies come up with the title for movies? Give me a break - They Drive By Night - doesn't that sound like a movie about working class truck drivers, and their adventures on the road? Nothing could be further from the plot of this intense thriller. Does it suggest a story about a demented killer? Does the name suggest that there will be dancing girls at the center of the story? Does it suggest that our killer will make the hairs on the back of our neck stand at attention when he is on the screen? I got none of this from the name of the movie, but it holds all of this and more. I dare say that this is one of the finest thrillers to ever come out of the wonderful isle of Britain - and it would have made suspense master Hitchcock jealous if he watched it and knew that he didn't make this film.

As our movie opens, small time London crook Shorty is getting out of jail. He goes back to his old neighborhood and stops at the old bar to quench his thirst and get back into the swing of things. His girlfriend is a dance hall girl - she dances with lonely strangers and collects a ticket for each dance, which she turns in at the end of the night and collects a commission. So after a drink and some chat at the bar, Shorty goes to visit his old girlfriend, and discovers her dead. Of course he is accused of her murder and goes on the run, stealing a truck and driver on the way. But soon they part, and Shorty is on a terrifying run barely one step ahead of the coppers. I really don't want to tell you much more about this plot, because I don't want to forewarn you of the chills that await you. I will tell you that I have watched a lot of movies, including most of Hitchcock's thrillers, but I have not had such real terror in my mind since I watched Hannibal Lecter on screen. Hold your white kernel popcorn close to you and keep the lights on bright, because you have no idea of what chills and thrills await you on this terrifying journey into 1938 London.

HOUSE OF MYSTERY - 1934 - VERNA HILLIE - RARE DVD
I've tried many careers over the past forty years that I learned were not my cup of tea. Twice I tried to sell things - a few years ago I tried to sell Ford cars at a Westlake, Ohio dealership, with disastrous results. And long ago, soon after I decided that I wasn't cut out to be a preacher like dad, I thought that selling life insurance would be fun and profitable. I talked the manager of the Youngstown, Ohio office of The New York Life to hire me, and I gave it a whirl. I enjoyed selling policies that I was convinced were a good thing to own, and I believed, and still believe, that The New York Life insurance company is one of the best. Unfortunately, I started selling insurance just about the time in the 1970's that the great steel belt from Pittsburgh to Cleveland to Illinois was slowing down and becoming the 'rust belt.' Mills were closing, and men from families who for generations knew no job but making steel were out of work and surely were not buying life insurance. I remember the day that I decided that I needed a new career, and probably a new town to find it in. I decided that the Youngstown, Ohio area was not big enough to provide a job for me after all the mills closed. My young wife and I literally flipped a coin to decide whether we would pick up and move to either Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania or Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland won, and soon we were in Brooklyn, Ohio starting all over again. When I was discussing my exit plans with my New York Life boss, he smiled his approval of my leaving the Mahoning Valley for Cleveland. He said that he was amazed at the number of unemployed young men who refused to leave Youngstown in search of a job. He mentioned that almost all of their parents or grandparents had travelled long miles from Europe in search of a better life, and now their kids wouldn't even move an hour away in search of a new job. Oops, . . . I'm rambling . . . insurance agents - that's where I was going.

A diverse group of people, including a bubbly, always confident insurance agent are invited to stay a week at a mansion in order to claim their share of the riches from a past expedition to a land of the Hindus. The local Hindu priest put a curse on the stolen riches, and anyone that would try to profit from them. So as these diverse people were staying in this possibly haunted house, they start dying, one by one. Of course, our intrepid insurance agent doesn't get knocked off, and continues trying to sell policies to people who are not expected to live out the week. Gee, if I were that confident and pushy I might still be selling life insurance instead of sharing old movies with you . . . . Nawww, I'd still be sharing old movies and trying to convince you that you should always munch on a bowl of hot buttered white kernel popcorn while you are enjoying your show.

THE GHOST WALKS - 1934 - RICHARD CARLE - RARE DVD
Usually when I watch a movie that I have never seen before, as I enjoy the story plot I am thinking about how to tease you into watching the movie. Sometimes for a horror movie I can lead you down the path just far enough to show you the unknown horror that might be ahead. Of course, few movies are unique, and once we get to a certain point in the story we can usually predict how the story will end.

Well, friends, I just finished watching The Ghost Walks, and a few minutes before the ending I was thinking that I would present a horror mystery to you, and inform you that you will not know exactly what is going on until the final scene . . . But something unusual has happened.

I watched the show from beginning to end, and after the final scene, as the screen dissolves into blackness, I am still not sure what exactly happened. My confusion is not because I did not understand the plot and sub-plots, and it is not because the story was written or presented badly. My confusion is the delicious result of watching the plot and sub-plots with delight, trying in vain to predict the next step, and as the story ends, I am still not exactly sure of what is real and what is not. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.

WHAT PRICE VENGEANCE - 1937 - LYLE TALBOT - RARE DVD
The film was part of the British Quota Law that existed in the 1930's that basically said in order for films produced in the U.S. by U.S. producers and companies to be shown in Great Britain or any of the colonies, a certain number of films shot somewhere in the British Empire, with the majority of the cast and crew British subjects, had to be shown in the U.S.A. This posed no problems for the major studios who either had production facilities in England or working agreements with the major British producers, but Columbia had neither. In order to comply with the British Quota, so Columbia films could be shown in England and its far-flung outposts, Columbia entered into an agreement with Commonwealth Studios, headed by Canadian-producer Kenneth J. Bishop, in Willows Park, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada to finance and shoot films there for distribution through Columbia's film exchanges. Most of these films starred imported Columbia contractees such as Rita Hayworth, Charles Quigley,...

COLLATERAL - TOM CRUISE - 2004 - DVD
This action thriller follows LA cabbie Max Durocher, the type of person who can wax poetic about other people's lives, which impresses U.S. Justice Department prosecutor Annie Farrell, one of his fares, so much that she gives him her telephone number at the end of her ride. Although a dedicated man as seen through the efficiency in which he does his work, he can't or won't translate that eloquence into a better life for himself. He deludes himself into believing that his now twelve year cabbie job is temporary and that someday he will own his own limousine service. He even lies to his hospitalized mother that he already owns one, with a further lie that he tells her as such primarily to make her happy, rather than the truth which is that he won't do anything to achieve that dream. One night, Max picks up a well dressed man named Vincent, who asks Max to be his only fare for the evening. For a flat fee of $600, plus an extra $100 if he gets to the airport on time - Vincent wants Max to drive him to five stops that evening. Max somewhat reluctantly agrees. Max learns the hard way at their first stop when a body falls from a third story apartment window and lands dead on top of his cab that Vincent is a contract hit man. Vincent's main goal, as per his current contract, is to kill five people, one at each of the stops, but he will not let others get in the way of that goal, even if it means killing them, including Max. As Vincent forces Max to continue driving him for the evening, Max tries slyly at every turn to take back control of his life from Vincent, especially when Max learns of one of the names on Vincent's hit list. Meanwhile, LAPD narcotics detective, Ray Fanning, and ultimately the FBI get involved when Vincent's first victim is associated with a case in which Ray is working undercover. Ray is able to piece together information which makes him hot on Max and Vincent's tail.

THE STATEMENT - MICHAEL CAINE - 2003 - DVD
1992. The French government has passed a law punishing crimes against humanity allowing them to prosecute Nazi collaborators from WWII. Magistrate Annemarie Livi has been assigned the case of Pierre Brossard, a police officer in Dombey, France in June, 1944, when he helped round up a group of Jewish persons and personally chose seven of them to be executed. Brossard was captured and held in police custody in 1955 following a trial where he was sentenced to death for being a collaborator, before he was able to escape. Brossard has since received a Presidential pardon for those crimes. Livi enlists the help of Colonel Roux of the French Army to assist in this case in she not trusting the police who assisted the Vichy regime during the war. While Roux informs her that he is aware of an unknown Jewish organization that is also tracking and wanting to execute Brossard, Livi knows that the pardon was arranged by someone who must have been an associate of Brossard - who she refers to as "The Old Man" - now probably high up in the government. They are also both aware that the Catholic church has actively been assisting Brossard all these years, probably in providing him both with funds and shelter, them being able to break through the closed ranks of the church a major hurdle they will have to overcome. Livi is further given a warning by a close family friend, Armand Bertier, a government minster, that she is walking into a land mine of a case. Brossard, who is aware that he is being tracked both by the Jewish and by the national authorities, is indeed what he considers a devout Catholic in the realm of the traditionalists, he, who trying to stay one step ahead of those tracking him, looking for absolution from the church, while not prepared to give himself up to either the Jewish or the authorities. The Jewish have their own additional motive beyond killing Brossard for his crimes, while those pulling their strings have one more additional motive in protecting themselves

THE TAILOR OF PANAMA - 2001 - JAMIE LEE CURTIS - DVD
Women have been MI.6. agent Andy Osnard's weakness. As punishment for being caught sleeping with the wrong woman on his last posting in Spain, Andy is relegated to the global backwater of Panama as his next field assignment. Although nothing is happening there on the surface, Panama is still seen as having global importance due to the canal, with something always possible to rock the boat as seen by the recent history of the corrupt regime of Manuel Noriega. The advice of his superior is to co-opt one of the only few hundred British nationals living there to act as an informant for pay. Who Andy chooses is Harry Pendel, a men's suits tailor with Savile Row credentials through his now deceased business partner Arthur Braithwaite. This choice is because of Harry's client list, he the tailor to the elite and powerful, including the Panamanian president, who may treat him like the proverbial "bartender" or "hairdresser" confidante, and because his American wife, Louisa, works in a senior managerial position within the canal authority. But what may have swayed Andy's choice the most is that he knows the truth about Harry: that he not only does not have Savile Row credentials, but is an ex-con, Arthur Braithwaite was his Uncle Benny, also a criminal, and that despite his tailor shop doing good business, he is deep in debt from a farming venture gone wrong, none of this about which Louisa knows. As such, Harry has no choice but to cooperate, the payment from Andy which at least gets him out of his farm debt. As a side, Harry also has some connections to people who actively worked in the opposition against Noriega: Mickie Abraxas, who has turned to the bottle to cope, and Harry's store manager Marta, the right side of her face which shows the physical scars of that war, the scars at the hands of Noriega's men. With Andy placing more and more pressure on Harry to provide intel of some importance, Andy eventually learns through Harry that the Panamanian government is planning on selling the canal to the Chinese. This intel is exactly what Andy was looking for to set in motion a plan to reach his ultimate goal with this Panamanian posting.
